Valencian Community

Alicante is one of the three provinces that are part of the Valencian Community. One of the salient features of this city is its intense port activity. Its strategic location on the Mediterranean Sea has done that historically this region there is held a prominent importance, as a point of connection with all the Mediterranean coast, attracting since time immemorial crowd of merchants, fishermen and passengers. Alicante is a fascinating city to take advantage of some of the existing cheap Getaways offers, and thus have to discover a city with history, but with a vibrant present. Thanks to the important communication routes linking the port of Alicante with the most important cities of the region, it has become a node for storage and distribution of goods and general cargo for the whole region.

In recent years has been remodeled and expanded the port area to be at the height of the volume transported by sea which enters and leaves Spain constantly through of the region. Alicante is one of the most traditional cities, which is evidenced by the large number of popular festivals that gather crowds year after year. A party not to be missed are the bonfires of San Juan, declared of tourist interest by the municipality in the year 1984. During these festivities is celebrated the summer solstice, tradition that dates back to the antiquity of humanity, who welcomed the auspicious time for sowing. Officially, it is celebrated on June 20.

The celebration culminates with a burning of a gigantic palm of fireworks carried out from the castle of Santa Barbara, to the delight of all the inhabitants of the city. During the celebrations is elected the Bellea del Foc, i.e. a kind of Queen, selected from among the finalists of each district. Also eat traditional as tuna cake or the brevas dishes. The Porrate de San Anton is another traditional celebration that takes place between 13 and 20 January, to honor San Anton. This feast is over 500 years old and is performs in the San Anton neighborhood. It is also worth being witnessed the Carnival, which is carried out in the Rambla. In short, there are many excuses to choose some of the escapes of weekend that can always find at this colourful and cheerful place and enjoy the living history of a people.
